Projects 3D Class!!

Project #1 Drawing In Space

Project Description/Assignment:This project is about drawing depth in space without framing it or not making look like it’s standing on surface. Im proud how it came out.

Lateral Thinking/concept/intent: At the time of making this project I started painting my nails again so I use nail polish in my project. I really like to joke a lot and I like memes so I use a picture I found online that my friend sends a lot cause it’s funny. Some people found my apple scary so I was surprised they didn’t get the memo. I draw a cake because I was hungry. I draw the insect because I wanted to learn how to draw one. And I draw the shoe because I already had an idea how to draw one.

Reflection: Some people suggested I should’ve shaded more on the shoe and the insect. I felt they wouldn’t grab more attention like the apple and nail polish so I kept it how it was. Im proud how it came out.

Project #2 Tyvek Suit Theme

Project Description/assignment: In this project, I design my tyvek Suit. Using alcohol markers I drew 3D elements. My theme was coffee and cats. There’s a bunch of coffee beans, coffee products, cats and mainly a cat wrap around the suit. The most interesting part was the cat wrap around the suit. The most excited parts are when i use the bright colors. This project as a whole was the most challenging part because i don’t know that much about markers and because I was drawing of a suit. This is my hardest projects yet.

Lateral thinking: I was brainstorming and I thought of these 3 ideas, food, Honduras and coffee & cats. I thought about food because it would be colorful and fun. I thought about Honduras because I wanted to research about the culture. I thought about coffee and cats because I love coffee and cats.

Sketchbook/Drawings: I was testing out the markers to see how it would layout.

Maquette’s: These 3 pictures that I took are the most i spend time on and I love how it came out. I wish I could’ve done the cat wrap my suit a little differently but I didn’t know how.

Material Studies: I never used alcohol markers until this project which was hard. I love the colors but I don’t like how you have to be careful because you might mess up. It’s not my favorite material but I will use this in future projects.

Finished Piece: I began this project thinking it would hard because I don’t like using markers and I never drew on a big suit. I was right but I’m glad I was able to complete it. My goal was to show a cat wrap around my suit as well having coffee protects. Originally, I wanted to draw the country Honduras but i felt it would’ve been too hard for me because I don’t think my classmates would’ve understand the items of my suit. So I drew something simple, cats and coffee. Using a lot of orange and yellow markers, help me draw the big cat wrap around my suit. I was trying to go for a whimsical funny theme so that’s why I drew a big funny looking cat. While this piece is finish, I wish the markers didn’t dry out. Maybe it would’ve been better.

Project #3 Combined Forms

Project Description/assignment: In this project I had to work together with Taylor, Kayley, and Bryanna. We had to build something that was almost the same height as us, using only card borad and wire. We couldn’t waste time so we went with Kayley idea which was building a fish. We as a group communicated and gave our own opinions. What I really like about this project is the scales of the fish and I gave that idea to the group. Before the scales it was noticeable to see the wrinkles of the card board tape. The fins we had different ideas so we all did ours differently, I did the bottom of the fin. Some fins had wire while others it’s just card board tape. The only parts of the fish that has wires is the bottom of the fin, the top fin, and the hook. To make the fish stand vertical, we added a hook on top to me it seems like we catch a fish. When presented we hook it on the ceiling lights to make the fish float.

Lateral thinking: We got our idea the same day of the start of the project and we plan how we were gonna structure the fish. We added pieces of small card board inside the fish to make the fish stay together, almost like bones if that makes sense.

Sketchbook/Drawings: The group was just thinking of ways of how to put the fish together.

Maquette’s: These 2 pictures are the parts of the fish where I spend working on the most. There were parts where it couldve been improve but we were running out of time. like maybe adding an eye patch to the fish.

Material Studies:This is my first time using wire and card board building. I really like playing with cardboard because there’s so many different ways to build. The wire was fun too but its also hard, wire can’t be noticeable so there has to be ways to make the understand what the piece is. Its also hard because it can be dangerous due to risk of physical injury. This was a very fun project yet challenging.

Finished Piece: At first I thought this project would be hard because I don’t like working in a group of people that I dont’t know. Turns out it was esay to talk to my group because they were nice and listen to everyone’s opinions. We made something simple so it can be esay for all of us and it turn out into a good fish. The only thing I change is probably the little mistakes we made when applying hot glue or making it look very nice but pretend the hot glue is just water haha.

Project #4 Open Form

Project Description/Assignment: In this project, we discuss kitsch and how it’s around in our daily lives. The class was assigned to bring a kitsch object so we have a better understanding of what kitsch is. I brought in my turtle keychain. To understand it even more, we as a class created a kitsch object. The class was assigned to create Kitsch by using clay. Creating 3 multiple scale hollow shapes out of clay. The Kitsch had to be dynamic using texture, color, and form. The Kitsch object also had to have repetition and gesture.

From my understanding, kitsch is an art design that has sentimentality, nostalgia, and a basic look. It tends to look cheap, and sometimes it can be humorous. An example of kitsch can be a piggy bank. It looks basic because there’s no story behind it, and it’s just a pig. With sentimental and humorous features, it’s often how it’s shaped; the pig could have a belly with small feet, which some people find cute. A piggy bank can be nostalgia because older people tend to have Kitsch items. Most piggy banks look basic because they are often cheap to buy and are often found in tourist shops.

How does my keychain turtle look, Kitsch? It’s a small object with soft edges, and it was bought at a tourist shop. The designs have a lot of nostalgia because it says “FLORIDA.” It has seaweed, sand, shells, and a crab inside of the turtle; it’s not ceramics, it’s plastic. The person who bought it for me went on vacation to Florida; hence, I have nostalgia for this person because they gifted me a kitsch object. It’s a cool Kitsch object because of the designs inside of the turtle, and although it doesn’t have details of a turtle, it has the shape of a turtle, which makes it dynamic.

Lateral thinking:  In the beginning of the project, I didn’t know what to create. I made 3 cylindrical shapes, not knowing what to do with them until I attached them together. My keychain turtle helps me brainstorm ideas, and I wanted to make a 3-cylinder shape that can stand on each side without falling. Along with that, I wanted cute turtles and splashing water around it. I went with the flow of the project.

Sketchbook/Drawings: This was my original idea.

Maquette’s: I feel the repetition of me creating turtles was making me bored because of how long of a process it was. I took a lot of time attaching the 3 cylinders together and making them clean. I feel like the hardest part of this project was using acrylic paint for this piece, which was my first time, and it didn’t turn out how I expected it to be. I’m used to using glazes for ceramic pieces because they blend so well, especially with terracotta clay.

Material Studies: I have had a lot of experience with clay ever since my sophomore year of high school. I love creating things with clay because I feel more creative. What I learn taking poetry classes is ceramic pieces will never come out how you want them unless you work really hard and understand the rules of pottery. It’s my own therapy, and even if I have no idea what to create with it, I still enjoy the comfort of playing with clay. I love doing ceramic pieces, and I sometimes wonder if I can own a ceramic shop.

Finished Piece: I have mixed feelings with my piece, mainly because it didn’t turn out how I wanted it to be. It’s a confusing piece to look at because it was incomplete. I didn’t have enough time to create water splashing around the piece, and I don’t think it would look cool if I painted it instead because it wouldn’t look dynamic enough. This was my first time using acrylic paint on a ceramic piece; because of that, it was an experiment for me. I am really glad that I got the chance of attaching the three cylinders and adding tiny turtles. Although I didn’t add the water splash, I added vines. Other than that, I would’ve changed the vines to water and painted it better. How is this piece kitsch? It has tiny repetitions of small turtles around the piece. This piece has purpose because a person would be able to add flowers inside the cylinder so it could be more dynamic; it’s like a household decoration.

Project #5 Exquisite Corpse

Project Description/ Assignment: In this project the class was assigned to create a body part, and we differently got a different body part. By creating it, we use clay that was technically store bought clay, but I’m not sure. The point of this project was to attach each body part that each student did. I was assigned to do the left leg. The only thing was we were not supposed to create a legit body part; we had to be creative and think of objects that would look like body parts. An example could be a pencil.

Lateral thinking: During this project I had to brainstorm ideas for what objects my left leg should be. I thought of a snake, a coil of vines, or a rose. I ended up doing the rose because the clay was hard to work with.

Sketchbook/Drawings: A sketch of the left leg rose.

Maquette’s: During this project I really struggled with the clay because it would get easily dirty and difficult to make it smooth, and most importantly, the clay would crack if there was little pressure on it. I try to make the foil skinny because usually the stem is skinny while the rose is bigger. But it was hard because it would collapse easily. The stem turns out thick, while the petals look weird.

Material Studies: This would probably be the last project using this particular clay. It was difficult smoothing because of how tough or soft it is. It’s collapsible. and it gets dirty. I don’t like anything about this clay, but I’ve been thinking about adding this clay on a canvas, but I’m not sure yet.

Finished Piece: I don’t like how it turned out because of how simple and basic this piece was. This piece is not dynamic, nor does it look creative. I wish I had more patience on this project because the clay was pretty hard to work with. I also wish I had more of a creative idea. The only thing I like about this piece is that it’s not falling apart.

Project #6 Pregnant Pause

Project Description/Assignment: This project asks me to make a short video (2–5 minutes) about everyday activities, like tying a shoe or brewing coffee, and turn them into something meaningful through editing. Instead of using dialogue, music, or acting, the idea is to focus on the “pregnant pause,” those quiet, unnoticed spaces between big events, and show how editing can create new meaning in the way shots connect.

Lateral thinking: While brainstorming, I thought of many different ways how to make a pregnant pause. My first idea was to have my friend and the snowy weather help make this video. In the video I was going to tell the camera why I love the weather of snow even though it’s cold and brings sickness and how dry the air is. And then when the weather is over, I would be sad that the cold weather is gone. Showing the viewer I’m reminiscing even though it hurt me. This is where my friend would come in and say, “It’s not about the snow, huh?” I wanted to use metaphors, but due to the busy schedule and the unpredictability, it didn’t happen.

My last idea was about making the viewer uncomfortable by doing things that people don’t normally do. Like when I use my hands to spread the black paint around the paper. The whole point of the video is to make them feel that they were living the moment even with uncomfortable situations, and when I ripped the paper apart, I wrote a message: “Don’t get attached.” This video relates to life because people get too comfortable with things because they have had good and bad memories of their situations, and they don’t let go or take risks because they are afraid that it’s not going to get better. I painted something that was simple, and then I ripped it and made it better.

Maquettes:  In this project I struggled more on the idea than I did with making the video

Material Studies: I like to say I have a bit of experience making and editing videos, but I still do need more experience.

Finished Piece: This video was fun to make, and it was pretty simple. I was more worried about presenting it, but it was okay. My video has pregnant pauses because the viewer pauses every moment of the actions I did in the video. Also, it’s a pregnant pause because during the end of the video, I show the result, so the viewer had to pause to see why I ripped the paper for a better result. That’s what “pregnant pause” means to me; it’s a moment where a person pauses to think or just a pause itself.

Rirkrit Tiravanija

What if you didn’t just look at art, but lived it instead? Rirkrit Tiravanija had made it possible to have galleries turn into kitchens, studios, and communal spaces basically making a person living the scene with art. What he’s basically trying say with with his art projects is relationships can be just as important to art as objects.

An example of a piece he did back in 2019 is The mirror stage 2019. Rirkrit Tiravange put big mirrors in a room and the whole point of the mirrors where to make it seem that the  people are broken into pieces. The he did it he made it way to people walk thought the rooms of mirrors and they would see themselves over and over again, making them seem smaller hence broken into pieces. This would make a person fell strange because they felt like they were broken in many parts. Tiravaniji when he created the tilted he got it from a psychology idea that said, we learn who we are by looking at ourselves in a mirror. He made an idea turn into art. This art made a person think about theirselves in deeper level and it’s probably why people found it stange. But beside making his audience feel stange he also made his audiencie feel hungry.

Rirkrit Tiravanija made an artwork about rice which its an everyday food in Asia. A piece untitled 2018 He wrote in huge letters “ASIANS MUST EAT RICE” on the a wall. Along this project he made people cook and eatogether. What made this art was having the words, food, and the people spending time with each other in the presence. Tiravanija made language and food into a sculpture like it was a present moment.

Rirkirt Tiravanji has a unique way of making art that no artist often do. What make his artwork 3D is how he use sculpture and life at the same time in a way of capturing a scene what makes his art so unique. It very creative because he uses his audience in most of his artwork which make more sculpture. The relationships that the audience towards eachother helps his artwork more alive prove the point of his project. His project will make a person think about their cutule, identity and how theny connect with others.

Before learning about Rirkirt Tiravanji, I thought he was a boring artist with boring artwork, but now I learn how he present his artwork. I feel like what makes him a unique artist is how he breaks the idea of sculpture. Normally when people think of sculpture they think of statues, 3-D art, or something looks real, but Tiravanji breaks that tradition which some artist dare to do. Reason why could be is because people now of days hate how some artist use the lack of skill or how they make their work too simple. An example could be like bananas tape on walls and that make people get mad because they are confuse why would an artist do a simple work. But ever since I learn Tiravanji, he put me in a different perspective how simple art feels. Maybe the whole point of the bananas rotting the time away was art or people getting mad was the art of the piece.

This bring us back to the question, what if you didn’t just look at art, but lived it instead. As Unrealistic that sounds, Rirkirt Tiravanji made his art seem like a everyday life basics. With art work being “ASIANS MUST EAT RICE” and the mirrior stage and many more pieces,He uses foods, mirrors, and people in the way it’s interpreted in everyday life basis. Tiravanji show people objects are not the only things that can showed as art but person owns life.
